Dirg Aab
Born in Jamaica, moved to Barbican aged 10; knew he was gay at 5, was out at school but feared life beyond. Made by parents to ‘toughen up’ by becoming a builder; coming out and struggling with studies led to hospitalization, where he learned to be independent.
Was a member of the Lesbian and Gay Black Group, the Black Lesbian and Gay Centre Project and South London Lesbian and Gay Young People’s Group. Worked to lessen people’s isolation. Wrote poetry, enjoyed clubbing pre-AIDS crisis; continues to campaign around HIV and its legacy. Wants to see recognition for what has been achieved.
