ORAL HISTORIES
Amber Djemal
Amber talks about life growing up as the daughter of Cypriot immigrants, rebelling as a teen against strict home and school life and discovering feminism; getting involved in activism at university as Thatcher became PM; working for Haringey Council under Bernie Grant and engaging with internationalist struggles; coming out as a lesbian at 24 and starting a group for Cypriot and Turkish gays and lesbians.
She remembers her early relationships, socializing with other queer communities of colour, and working to diversify images of lesbians through a postcard project. She felt in the 80s like she could change the world.
