ORAL HISTORIES
Yvonne Taylor
Nottingham-born, living in London for 40 years. Acknowledged sexuality very early; joined army at 18; left due to racism and opposing going to the Falklands. Identifies as queer. Wasn’t impressed by music on London scene. Part of DJ collective Sistermatic from 1986-1990 to create an inclusive space for women and play music that reflected black culture.
Saw a big shift in the 90s to lesbians and gays being welcome in mainstream clubs. Worked in social housing for Stonewall and Homeless Action. Started doing promoting again in 2000. Now runs Sunday Happy Day. Worries there is no scene for older lesbians.
